Position description

The Forest Ecology Lab, under the guidance of Dr. John Battles (PI), with the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management (ESPM) within the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking highly motivated individuals for the position of Associate or Full Specialist.

The Forest Ecology and Ecosystem Dynamics Lab is a group of scholars who share an interest in understanding forest ecosystems in terms of their ecology, management, and policy. Robust, quantitative field studies form the core of our approach. Specifically, we want to know how and why forests change. Answering these questions is more than just an interesting academic puzzle. We expand the scope of our field-based insights by collaborating with a diverse group of ecosystem scientists, remote sensing experts, and data scientists to develop scientifically robust and management relevant information. Specifically, we work with scientists, managers and policy makers in California to develop the best available information to reduce the vulnerability of our forests, firefighters, and communities to the risks of high severity wildfire. We conduct this work within the framework of the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force --a joint federal and state effort to collectively treat 1 million acres per year to reduce wildfire hazard and improve landscape resilience across California. The Forest Ecology Lab is one of 20 labs across California that share their collective expertise by serving on the Science Advisory Panel.

Examples of the research questions our lab is helping to answer include:

(a) What are the ecological and social trade-offs underlying California's 'Million Acre Strategy'?
(b) How do we measure the landscape scale efficacy of fuel reduction and forest restoration treatments?
(c) What features and functions should be included in a decision support system designed to help regional and local communities prioritize forest treatments?

The expectation is that this position will support the collective scientific contributions of the Forest Ecology Lab to the Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force.

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. The specialist will work with the scientists, managers, and policymakers trying to answer the questions regarding trade-offs, efficacy and decision support.
  2. The specialist will contribute to the Forest Ecology Lab's efforts to provide science advice to the Task Force.
  3. The specialist will contribute to reports and publications produced by the Forest Ecology Lab.
  4. The specialist will contribute to presentations, workshops, and public meetings delivered in person and online by the Forest Ecology Lab.
  5. The specialist will conduct quantitative analyses, literature reviews, and scholarly syntheses that inform forest management and policy in California and beyond.
  6. The specialist will support the logistical and administrative efforts associated with the Forest Ecology Lab's participation on the Science Advisory Panel.
